Greenwood Artifical Ice Rink

Greenwood Park is the City of Toronto's first covered outdoor artificial ice rink, featuring a Figure-8 skating trail unique in its kind. The project included a 1,129 sq. m outdoor artificial ice pad alongside a 1,510 sq. m ice skating trail with underfloor radiant heating using waste heat from the refrigeration system, complete with piping below the Zamboni storage area and driveway. Work involved removal of existing building services, trees, and sidewalks, construction of the new outdoor ice pad with refrigeration and Zamboni. An elegant curved steel canopy was built to cover the rink and prevent rain and sun from melting the ice prematurely. Site work included new landscaping, deciduous tree and shrub planting, ledgerock seat wall, benches, new lighting, and a paver area. Budget extras resulted from client-requested design changes including marquee retention, installation of banners, additional conduits, and awnings and tempered glass. Schedule was extended due to inclement weather including Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.
